Nikichi Akihiko Yoshida

Nikichi Akihiko Yoshida
Hokkaido, Japan
(born 1954) Nikichi's sculptures are striking not only for their form but also for their mood. His animals seem to live their own lives, sleeping, dreaming, breathing. The artist pays special attention to the eyes—or, more accurately, their absence in the traditional sense. Many of his creatures have closed eyes, and this conceals a profound meaning. Closed eyes symbolize peace, trust, and inner peace.
